Steady periodic water waves under nonlinear elastic membranes
This is a study of two-dimensional steady periodic travelling waves on the surface of an infinitely deep irrotational ocean, when the top streamline is in contact with a membrane which has a nonlinear response to stretching and bending, and the pressure in the air above is constant. It is not supposed that the waves have small amplitude. The problem of existence of such waves is addressed using...
متن کاملNonlinear waves in an inextensible flexible helix
The complete analytical solution of the governing nonlinear vector equations is found which describes periodic and solitary propagating-rotating waves in an initially helical fiber. A detailed description of various types of these waves is given. The solitary wave velocity is found to be proportional to the square root of the amplitude of the internal force, and the effective wave length is sho...
متن کاملNonlinear Vibration Analysis of an Euler-Bernoulli Beam Resting on a Nonlinear Elastic Foundation under Compressive Axial Force
This paper studies the nonlinear vibration analysis of a simply supported Euler-Bernoulli beam resting on a nonlinear elastic foundation under compressive axial load using nonlinear normal modes concept in the case of three-to-one (3:1) internal resonance. The beam’s governing nonlinear PDE of motion and also its boundary conditions are derived and then solved using the method of Multiple Time ...
متن کاملNonlinear localized waves in a periodic medium.
We analyze the existence and stability of nonlinear localized waves in a periodic medium described by the Kronig-Penney model with a nonlinear defect. We demonstrate the existence of a novel type of stable nonlinear band-gap localized state, and also reveal a generic physical mechanism of the oscillatory wave instabilities associated with the band-gap resonances.
متن کاملNavier-stokes Equations Interacting with a Nonlinear Elastic Shell
Abstract. We study a moving boundary value problem consisting of a viscous incompressible fluid moving and interacting with a nonlinear elastic shell. The fluid motion is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, while the shell is modeled by the nonlinear St. Venant-Kirchhoff constitutive law, and they are coupled together by continuity of displacement and traction (stress) along the moving mat...
